The neighbouring resort to Ischgl in Austria, Samnaun and Ischgl together make up the largest ski area in the Eastern Alpes. Thanks to it's remote geography, with the only road to the village in the 19th century coming from Austria rather than Switzerland, Samnaun is exempt from Swiss sales taxes.

Snow conditions in Samnaun
With the highest ski lift reaching up to 2864m there is always guaranteed snow during the winter season. There is also 260 snow cannons which contribute to the natural snowfall with artificial snow for guaranteed skiing on around 50 of the slopes from December to April.
Skiing in Samnaun
The long red run from the top of the Palinkopf at 2864m down to the village has become known as the duty free run, with skiers zooming down in the afternoon to collect tax-free goodies from the Swiss side of the border.
With ultra-modern high speed lifts and a less rowdy atmosphere than Ischgl, Samnaun is an excellent option for exploring the gigantic Silveretta ski area
