Hotel Rila - the perfect choice! - 14/03/2022

Just got back from a fabulous snowboarding holiday in Borovets. Stayed at the Hotel Rila. Number 1 on Trip Adviser and hardly surprising as it’s a well managed, recently refurbished, modern hotel with fabulous facilities. I will definitely stay again.

Hotel Ela - what a week! - 14/03/2022

My wife and I had such a brilliant time in Bulgaria. She is a very very experienced skier, I am intermediate at best. Borovets had a really nice mix of lovely long blue runs, challenging reds and the odd black run which meant we never got bored. It was also notably brilliant for beginners, with a lovely set of simple slopes that run right down to the entrance of hotel Rila. Few things - we had not expected the food to be so good. It’s cheap and amazing. We ate out every night and struggled to break £30 between us with drinks and dinner. It’s also very good if you’re veggie. Yes the hotels look a bit old fashioned, and it’s not glamorous like France. But nobody was taking themselves as seriously. There was a lovely friendly vibe about the whole town, with no pushing in on the slopes at the lifts and everyone just generally having fun. If you’re new to skiing, it takes all the intimidation out of it. One to watch is the temperature. It might be that we were unlucky, but the top runs at the highest peak were -14, with a need for proper warm gear. It also whited out a lot which meant we couldn’t really access the highest ski fields. The Masala pathway run is a beautiful 20 minute long blue run through the forest. Highly recommend. The only negative really was that covid safety seems to have gone completely out the window. The bus from hotel was boiling hot with closed windows - covid central. No masks either. Worth perhaps a private transfer to resort just so you don’t get sick on your holidays. Same for the bars, they’re packed and warm, with zero social distancing or masks. Just a heads up for those bothered by that. Otherwise, best value ski holiday I’ve had. Slopes were more than adequate and the whole vibe of the place was just really friendly and fun. Good for a couple and good for kids.

Brilliant holiday - 09/03/2020

We have just returned form our week away and have all had a brilliant time. There was 9 people in our party, 1 person didn't ski but took full use of the free spar access and had a very chilled week. In our party there were a few of us that have a lot of experience skiing and some that had no been in over 10 years, There was enough skiing for all of us and everyone enjoyed it.

Fantastic location if you don't mind a bit of noise at night as the partying is on your doorstep. Our rooms were facing the slopes so the rooms across the hall might be a quieter option. The seating / bar area gets very smoky especially in the morning while everyone is having coffee and in the evening before and after dinner. There is also a small casino in the hotel.
