First time in Borovets and what a great little place. If you read some reviews you'd never give it a look... your loss! The hotel although a little dated by UK standards is fabulous. It is well located, spacious, well equipped and extremely good value for money. The staff are helpful and friendly and the food is great and plentiful. My family are fairly fussy eaters and all the negative remarks are completely wide of the mark to say the least. There is something for everyone and generally very healthy too. You know you are in an Eastern European country so give them a chance and you'll find the effort worth it. The skiing was a little limited due to the lack of fresh snow, but the snow canons do an excellent job of freshening things up. If you decide to visit Borovets pop in and see Christo "Super Mario" Angelov at the White Magic Bar. He is an ex Bulgarian ski champion and even took our group of teenage lads for a blast around the slopes. At the end of the week he sorted out the servicing of our skis so they're ready to revisit hopefully in the not too distant future. Unless you are a complete ski you will have a great time.

We went snowboarding in Borovets and we had a fantastic time! Rila hotel is comfortable, the rooms are fairly big and cleaned daily, the food in the hotel was great (and plenty of it, which is important when you've spent a whole day on the slope!). The people in the ski depot were friendly and helpful. Chilli Peppers bar is worth visiting for an apres ski drink, if only to see (and listen to) the in-house tribute band. They favour Red Hot Chilli Peppers and U2 but they're very amusing and not bad at all. Franco'sd is good for lunch but the staff there were not exactly polite in the evenings. During the day they were lovely. Our instructor was a nice guy and very patient. We felt confident enough to go off on our own after three days of tuition. There was plenty of snow, sunshine and the prices, though inflated comparing to Sofia, were not bad. I wholeheartedly recommend Borovets as a winter holiday destination!

Eating out is very cheap. I would recommend the Blue bar and the Black cat, which does fantastic salads. If you are staying in a chalet and renting ski/board gear, keep these on you all week, you do not have to keep handing it all back each day, you just get up and go. Even if you don't think you're ready, its worth going on the gondola to the top of the mountain, the views are stunning and the snow is better.
