Best ski resorts for a short break or long weekend

Best ski resorts for a short break or long weekend

Whether you’re trying to squeeze one more weekend of skiing into the season or you’re working with a limited budget or timeframe, a short ski break is the perfect way to get a quick fix.

You can enjoy a three or four-day ski getaway midweek or over a long weekend, giving you more flexibility and requiring less commitment than a week-long holiday. It’s also a low stakes way for first-timers to try out the sport or for keen skiers to introduce their partner to the slopes.

Whatever the reason, it’s vital to choose the right resort – because when it comes to short breaks, not all are created equal. We’ve rated and ranked the resorts we consider to have the best qualities for a flying visit. Let’s go.

How did we rank our short break resorts?

We honed in on four core factors to determine our ranking of the best short break resorts.

When you’re only away for three or four days, you want to spend as little time as possible in transit to maximise time on the mountain – so the shorter the journey from the airport to the resort the better. You also want the best possible conditions for your brief getaway, so we scored resorts with more average days of snowfall per season highly.

Next, we factored in lift efficiency – the capacity of ski lifts measured in skiers per hour divided by size of the resort – because when you’re queuing you’re not skiing. Finally, we considered the cost of a three and four-day lift pass, giving a slight ranking advantage to those with a cheaper pass.

The 10 best short break and long weekend ski resorts

Using the factors above, we whittled down our short break shortlist to a top 10.

Austrian resorts Mayrhofen and St Anton landed the top spots, each delivering a balance of limited transit time, healthy snowfall and lift efficiency.

Six of the remaining eight were French resorts, with Flaine in a respectable third place and Milky Way’s Sauze d'Oulx, one of two Italian resorts, in fifth.

Here's the list in full:

1. Mayrhofen Best for a short transfer

2. St Anton Best for transport accessibility

3. Flaine Best for easy slopes

4. Sauze d’Oulx Best for a cheap short break

5. ChamonixBest for experienced skiers

6. AvoriazBest for snow reliability

7. SamoënsBest for families

8. Megève Best for a couples getaway

9. Kitzbühel Best for a picturesque short break

10. Courmayeur - Best for quiet slopes

1. Mayrhofen – Best for a short transfer

Distance from airport: 60 minutes from Innsbruck
Snow days per season: 63.42
Lift efficiency score: 586
3 day lift pass cost: €232
4 day lift pass cost: €294

If you’re after maximum slope-time and optimal snow conditions, Mayrhofen is a safe bet for a superb short ski break.

It only takes an hour to get there from Innsbruck, the shortest transfer time in our ranking. And with over 63 days of snowfall a season and a super-efficient lift system, you’ll be sure to get the most of your limited time on the mountain.

It’s just as much of an all-rounder when it comes to skiing. Around a third of its runs are beginner-level, many of which you’ll find in the Ahorn area; half are red, so intermediate skiers are in for a thrilling few days (head to the Penken and Eggalm areas); and the remaining 20% are black runs, including the famous Harakiri, Austria’s steepest groomed piste.

If you’re also hoping to squeeze in a couple of nights of partying, you’re in luck – Mayrhofen has some of the best apres bars in Austria and indeed the whole of the Alps. As time is tight, head straight to the bar at the slopeside Pilzbar or Elchbar for a dose of classic après.

2. St Anton – Best for transport accessibility

Distance from airport: 75 minutes from Innsbruck
Snow days per season: 71.82
Lift efficiency score: 482
3 day lift pass cost: €241
4 day lift pass cost: €318

If you’re looking to getaway for a long weekend of skiing, St Anton delivers on every front. If you fly into Innsbruck, the transfer time is just 75 minutes by road. But on top of that, the resort has excellent rail links. There’s a train station right in the town centre, with direct links from Innsbruck airport, Zurich and Vienna.

As one of Austria’s most snow-sure resorts, with over 70 snow days a season, you can look forward to fantastic conditions during your short break. St Anton’s state-of-the-art lift system provides a rapid and reliable way to get around the Ski Arlberg area’s massive 500km of pistes – enough for you to enjoy many long ski weekends. There’s a fairly even proportion of blues and reds, and a fair number of blacks, though the terrain is definitely more suited to intermediate and advanced-level skiers.

St Anton’s apres scene is regarded as one of the best in the world. There are around 45 bars across its villages, and no trip is complete without hearing the Mooserwirt start the party with Europe’s The Final Countdown at 3.30pm on the dot every day.

3. Flaine – Best for easy slopes

Distance from airport: 75 minutes from Geneva
Snow days per season: 63.00
Lift efficiency score: 291
3 day lift pass cost: €183
4 day lift pass cost: €244

If you’d prefer a French flavour to your short break, look no further than Flaine, especially if you’re a beginner. The resort is known for its family-friendly atmosphere, car-free streets and easy slopes – all just a 75-minute drive from Geneva airport.

Located in the 265km Grand Massif ski area (alongside our eighth best short break resort, Samoëns), the general feeling of accessibility is enhanced by its relatively affordable three and four-day lift passes. And with 63 snow days a season, there’s a good chance you’ll have decent conditions for your condensed ski trip.

While not known as an apres hotspot, if you do want to party, you can have a drink and a dance at Le Pente à Jules, Le White Pub and Le Diamont Noir.

4. Sauze d’Oulx – Best for a cheap short break

Distance from airport: 75 minutes from Turin
Snow days per season: 57.96
Lift efficiency score: 225
3 day lift pass cost: €166
4 day lift pass cost: €219

Sauze d’Oulx is the largest and liveliest of the seven Via Lattea (Milky Way) ski resorts – it’s also the best for a long weekend of skiing.

You can reach it in just 75 minutes from Turin airport, with loads of direct flights from the UK. There you’ll find a charming village, very affordable lift passes, and the largest ski area in Italy, with 400km of slopes to suit all abilities – though it’s intermediates who really have the run of the place (over half the slopes in the Milky Way are red). And if you fancy a quick hit of sun as well as snow, you’re in luck: Sauze d’Oulx enjoys a high number of bluebird days and nearly 58 snow days per season.

Amongst Brits, Sauze d’Oulx used to have a reputation as a bit of a party town. And although it's chilled out a bit since then, establishments like Ghost Bar and Hotel Derby Bar still fly the flag for Italian apres.

5. Chamonix – Best for experienced skiers

Distance from airport: 75 minutes from Geneva
Snow days per season: 72.24
Lift efficiency score: 310
3 day lift pass cost: €285
4 day lift pass cost: €380

Fly into Geneva, and within 75 minutes, you could be ready to commence a few action-packed days of skiing at one of France’s oldest and most well-known ski resorts: Chamonix.

With its beautiful old town, world-class terrain, and mighty Mont Blanc backdrop, Chamonix is the ideal place for a condensed version of the classic Alpine ski trip. And despite being relatively low-lying (1,035m), with lifts going up to 3,842m and 72 snow days per season, your short break should be secure on the snow front.

Chamonix is linked to Verbier, Courmayeur and Megève by the Mont Blanc Unlimited lift pass, which opens up 762km of pistes. It is, deservedly, known as a ski area for more experienced skiers, with the vast majority of its runs graded as intermediate or advanced. That makes it ideal for experts who want to get stuck in and make the most of their limited slope time.

6. Avoriaz – Best for snow reliability

Distance from airport: 90 minutes from Geneva
Snow days per season: 60.90
Lift efficiency score: 376
3 day lift pass cost: €215
4 day lift pass cost: €264

Avoriaz is just that little bit further from Geneva (90-minute transfer), but what’s an extra 15 minutes when the destination is so sublime?

Located in the centre of the vast Portes du Soleil – a 650km ski area that links 12 resorts across France and Switzerland – this purpose-built, fully pedestrianised resort was designed for maximum convenience, and you can walk from one end to the other in about 15 minutes. Not that you’ll need to do it on foot: thanks to its high altitude (1,800m) and excellent snow record (over 60 days a season), you’ll never need to remove your skis – 100% of its distinctive wood-clad high-rises have been designed as ski-in-ski-out accommodation.

This makes it easy to reach the various amenities (including excellent restaurants and bars, spa facilities, and a topical-themed swimming pool complex) and the slopes – perfect for a short break or long weekend.

7. Samoëns – Best for families

Distance from airport: 65 minutes from Geneva
Snow days per season: 53.76
Lift efficiency score: 291
3 day lift pass cost: €183
4 day lift pass cost: €244

If you’re taking the kids with you for a short ski trip, Samoëns is a great shout. Just over an hour from Geneva, they'll barely have time to ask “are we there yet” before they’re clipping into their skis and making their first descent of the weekend.

Like Flaine, the resort belongs to the 265km Grand Massif ski area, known for its varied terrain, spectacular scenery and family-friendly qualities – and Samoëns is one of its finest examples. The charming village dates back to medieval times, and much of it is pedestrianised, making it a pleasant place to wander round with children. You’ll also find lots of suitable restaurants and activities for the whole family. The Grand Massif Express (GME) cable car, the primary access point for the slopes, is easy to reach from the resort’s accommodation and takes you straight to the beginner area, Samoëns 1600.

8. Megève – Best for a couples getaway

Distance from airport: 75 minutes from Geneva
Snow days per season: 58.38
Lift efficiency score: 211
3 day lift pass cost: €176.50
4 day lift pass cost: €224

With its luxury hotels and Michelin star restaurants, charming cobblestone streets and horse-drawn carriages, there’s a certain romance to Megève that makes it the ideal destination for a quick couples getaway.

Just 75 minutes from Geneva, the resort has nearly 150km of pistes that are suitable for all abilities. There are nursery slopes near all the main lift bases, and more experienced skiers can reach Chamonix, Verbier, and Courmayeur on the Mont Blanc Unlimited lift pass.

With an average of 58 snow days a season, you can be confident about the conditions, and at €176.50 for a three-day pass, it’s one of the cheapest resorts to get around.

9. Kitzbühel – Best for a picturesque short break

Distance from airport: 75 minutes from Salzburg
Snow days per season: 59.22
Lift efficiency score: 333
3 day lift pass cost: €233
4 day lift pass cost: €294

With traditional Tyrolean architecture, cobbled streets and spectacular panoramas, all just 75 minutes from Salzburg, Kitzbühel is another brilliant resort for a quick fix of Alpine charm.

The resort’s well-developed lift network serves over 200km of scenic runs, from gentle cruisers to the famous Hahnenkamm descent. Kitzbühel’s lift system is among the most advanced in Austria, ensuring easy access to high slopes and panoramic viewpoints. Off the snow, you’ll find boutique shops, fine dining, and cosy après-ski bars to get settled into for the evening.

With an average 60 days of snowfall per season, Kitzbühel is a reliable resort for a short break or long weekend.

10. Courmayeur – Best for quiet slopes

Distance from airport: 90 minutes from Geneva
Snow days per season: 64.68
Lift efficiency score: 263
3 day lift pass cost: €285
4 day lift pass cost: €380

Another Mont Blanc unlimited resort (alongside Chamonix and Megève), Courmayeur is a little further away from Geneva (90 minutes) but shares many of their short break-friendly qualities.

With nearly 65 days of snowfall a season and over 80% snow cannon coverage, the ski area is snow sure and the slopes aren’t typically as busy as its more well-known neighbours. The terrain is suitable for all abilities, but experts won’t want to miss the two famous off-piste routes, Vallee Blanche and the Toula Glacier. Just make sure to book a guide.

It’s also just a lovely place to hang about for a weekend. The compact 17th-century spa town has bags of charm and character. Its pedestrianised centre is packed with boutique shops, cosy wine bars, and gourmet restaurants – perfect for relaxing after a day on the slopes. And there’s that stunning view of Mont Blanc to enjoy. If you have time during your short break, for the best views, ride the Skyway Monte Bianco cable car, which takes you to the highest point in Italy.
