Nestled high in the Austrian Alps, Obergurgl is a safe bet if you want to guarantee some great skiing. It’s got 110km of pistes (if also counting satellite town Hochgurgl) and is one of the first non-glacier resorts in the Tirol region to welcome skiers each season.
Obergurgl is more of a family resort than an all-out party town, but there’s a good selection of pubs, bars, and clubs, which means you can always find somewhere for a post-ski drink, have a dance to live music, or party until the early hours.
It’s not a hardcore party town like Val Thorens, nor does it have the hectic apres scenes of St Anton, but Obergurgl still offers choice. Keep reading to find out everything you need to know about the bar and après scene in Obergurgl.

Our must-visit après ski bars and nightlife hotspots in Obergurgl are:
1. Nederhütte
2. Josl-Keller
7. Fassl Bar
8. Pic Nic
The best bar for mountain partying and live music
- Nederhütte
This is by far the biggest slopeside venue for partying, with doors opening at 10am each day and a live house band jamming the tunes from 4pm, all through the evening. These aren’t traditional Austrian tunes though the band covers all sorts, including folk, rock and pop stuff.
Just off the Hohe Mut Bahn station (the gondola which takes you from town into the mountains) at 2104m, Nederhütte has a vast sun terrace where people dance away, with idyllic mountain views in all directions.
Once the party wraps up, you can either ski down a simple blue back to town, or jump on the gondola – before the night continues in town.

The best nightclub for partying ‘til the early hours
- Josl-Keller
This basement night club is the only such place in town. With a swanky feel to it, Josl-Keller welcomes host DJs to entertain the masses, while each night often takes a different theme - retro, Ibiza and beach styles are previous examples.
Located in the Hotel Josl, the Josl-Keller also often hosts live bands, meaning everyone is catered to at some point during the week.
Best bar for watching sports
- Ice-Berg Sports Bar
This place is a cosy bar for après-ski in a fairly central location in town, with TVs showing constant live sport. If there’s a big Champions League, Six Nations, or test cricket match you want to catch (or anything really), then these guys have got you covered.
Best bar for mountain views
- TOP Mountain Star
This sensational piece of architecture will leave a lasting memory on all who visit. Perched close to the very highest point of the Obergurgl-Hochgurgl ski area, Top Mountain Star is a glass-fronted restaurant and bar which offers deluxe sweeping views of the Austrian Alps for miles and miles.
To get there, just jump off the Wurmkogelbahn chairlift and slide along a bit. Located at 3,030m, you can even rent out the entire restaurant for your own personal party.

Best bar for craft beer
- Schirmbar Edelweiss
This rustic establishment is found at the bottom of the main Hohe Mut Bahn station and is a traditional umbrella bar which welcomes loads of tired skiers for a soothing pint after a hard day’s work.
One of the best things about Schirmbar Edelweiss is the fact it stocks locally brewed beers, meaning you can really get a proper taste of Obergurgl and the surrounding region. It’s a great place to kick off the evening before venturing further back into town.

Best bar to raise the energy for the evening
- Fassl Bar
Once the slopeside bars have quietened down and you’re wandering back into town, Fassl Bar should be a strong contender for your next stop. Right in the centre of town next to the Hotel Mathiesn, the quirky-looking Fassl is built to look like some large wooden beer barrels.
This place is usually buzzing in the later evenings, with a wide variety of music on offer – from old bangers all the way to modern day dance music.

Best bar for something a bit more relaxed
- Jenewein's Après-Ski
If you’re after something a bit more low-key, head over to the Hotel Jenewein, where you’ll find a huge terrace to relax in any late afternoon sunshine. Covered with a massive umbrella to protect against snow showers, it is a cosy place to be – with fluffy bar stools and blankets . It has great views, including over the piste near the Hohe Mut gondola.
If the weather outdoors is too harsh, then just head inside where you can continue to chat and relax. It’s a great glühwein stop off and a perfect way to end the night if you’re a sensible soul.
Best bar for mixing drink with good food
- Pic Nic
Pic Nic is primarily a restaurant – but with a twist. They’ll welcome you for some drinks, but you won’t need to buy a full-on meal. Instead you can nibble on some traditional Austrian foods, such as the Wiener Schnitzel – said to be the best in Obergurgl.
Special mentions for food offerings also go to Top Mountain Star and the Hotel Jenewein.
Where to stay if you want to be near Obergurgl’s après hotspots
Most of the lively spots listed above are in the centre of town, so you’ll want something centrally located if you’re keen for a quick walk back after a night out.
Of course, if you’re leaving the Josl-Keller at 3am then there’s no shorter walk back than going upstairs to your room in the Hotel Josl. Meanwhile, Hotel Olympia and Hotel Bellevue are popular with Iglu customers.
If you want something a bit further away from all the noise though, then try Hotel Madeleine or Hotel Haus Gurgl.
If you want self-catered, then the Gurglhof Apartments aren’t too far from the town centre, while Apartmenthouse Madeleine is good value for money.
